Zen-Cart vs X-Cart – Free vs Cost – Can I change later?

03/26/2011 6:35:00 AM

I am beginning a site store and was about to use Zen-Cart, which is free, when my partner pointed out the added benefits of using X-Cart, which costs $115. We are not in a position to fork out this kind of money. What is the practicality of beginning our site using Zen-Cart and later converting over to X-Cart when the business can pay for it on it’s own? At that point we will have folks who sell from our site, as well, and will have added their products to our store for selling.

What benefits are there to X-Cart that aren’t in Zen-Cart? You and your partner should check out all of the available add on modules that Zen-Cart has to offer:

http://www.zen-cart.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=40&zenid=01b23686784688c6bbad9972d7107bce

I have been using zen cart for years and have found modules for everything that I need. Since it is open source, I have also been able to modify existing modules to suit my needs.

  2. It’s not practical to start a web-site with one software and then change to some other. Just imagine that you will have to move other everything you added and created (e.g. products catalog, design, users, etc) and re-do many things. It’s better to stick with Zen or X-Cart or some other solution from the very beginning. Zen Cart is free. X-Cart is free for evaluation with NO functional and time constraints so you can try out both solutions on some dummy installation before starting your project development.

If you are a small business owner with limited budget you can start using Ecwid (http://www.ecwid.com) – a free SaaS solution that takes several minutes to setup a shopping cart on any existing web-site.
